1.5 Corroborate important claims
The more important the claim, the stronger the independent verification should be.
For an important claim, ask: Does another reliable source independently support this?
Stronger checking is appropriate when a claim is surprising, politically sensitive, disputed, financially significant, central to a recommendation or likely to affect an important decision.
For low-consequence information, a basic check may be enough. For high-consequence information, verify the primary source and seek independent corroboration.
5 — CORROBORATION: Match the strength of verification to the consequence of being wrong.
